4 Steps for Making Big Decisions

So, you’ve got a big decision to make.

We’ve all been there. It’s a tough situation to be in!

But it doesn’t always have to be a difficult process to make a big decision. It comes down to knowing what you need and trusting yourself to make the best possible decision for your life.

Here are some simple but effective steps to take when faced with making big decisions in your life:

  1. Find your need.

First, it’s best to figure out the basics:

Why are you making this decision?

Who will it affect?

What is your timeline?

What are your options?

Yes, chances are, you’ll have a few options.

The more you can narrow down those options the easier it’ll be to come to a decision. I personally like to write my options down so that I have a visual comparison to work with. Making a list of pros and cons is also helpful.

So think, carefully and deliberately: what do you need?

  1. Find your want.

Some people tend to confuse want with need and that’s completely normal. It’s a hard skill to learn how to separate your wants from your needs because generally, when we want something, we really want it.

However, identifying the difference between want and need doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t find a way to accommodate both. You just need to be able to compromise in order to reach your goal. Consider the possibility that your wants may change when your needs are finally addressed.

  1. Find your silence.

It’s alright to seek the advice of someone you trust, but ultimately realize that the final decision is your own and no one can take that responsibility from you.

A good way to approach someone is by asking how they would make their decision. What kinds of things would they consider? How do they relate it to what’s important to them?

Often, people come to realize what choice they’re favouring when they ask for the advice of someone they trust but it’s important to recognize that having the opinions of too many people may cloud your own judgement. Don’t be afraid to trust yourself – you don’t always need validation from other people to make a decision that affects your life.

  1. Find your fear.

One of the biggest challenges of making a big decision can be facing the notion of the “unknown”. There’s no guarantee in any of the decisions that we make and to some people – myself included – that can be a terrifying thought.

But you shouldn’t let that stop you.

Embrace your fears about uncertainty. If the fear of the unknown is the only thing holding you back, take a leap of faith and trust your instincts. Life is about new experiences and the chance to be bold and adventurous. Try something new without fear, all the while knowing that “you’re always one decision away from a totally different life.”
